Even although I have my rack with new nuts and bolts and washers etc.( sudries I think you would call them) I still have a big plastic tub under my bench in the garage with used nuts and bolts of various threads and lengths and old other bits that I have had for years. I should really throw them out but you become attached to your old bits. I have boxes of old marina bits that I have collected over the yearslike SU carb bits and old brake fitting kits to name 2. The problem is that if I throw them out I will be looking for them next week. I am just a magpie . _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

I think it'd be impossible to own and tinker with old cars if you didn't have a stock of bits, pieces, odds and ends, string, tape, odd fittings, bits of pipe, tubing, random tins of paint, and a motley assortment of tools, drill bits etc

Always worth hanging on to odd stuff, as I saw in the following
webpage the other day, it's amazing what tools you can make to
overcome obstacles in your restoration......
Scroll down to about half way where he rebuilds the front fork legs:

I wish I just had a big plastic tub I'm a bit of a magpie too, anything in our house that gets chucked out gets a scan from me for that potential useful bracket!! I decided a few weeks ago to try to keep my workshop and storage separate and have spent the last couple of days removing “bits” into my containers....I didn’t realise I had so much stuff, thus far 12 crates of stuff have gone into storage

Aren't the containers a bit of a trek from your workshop though?
Re chucking stuff out, I'm the same, no eleccy appliance for instance goes into the bin without losing some of its screws, and of course the plug.

I am the same with plugs. Goodness knows how many fuses I have lying about. Half of them probably dont even work. I have plenty empty biscuit tins and sweetie tins lying about.....in case they come in handy for keeping bits in. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

Hi
I have actually run out of plugs, I refuse to buy new ones, shudder to think, I obviously do not disguard enough stuff to cut the plugs off, then again, most modern tat has molded plugs on these days
Cheers

To save it going to the tip, feel free to leave it to me... That is of course if I live long enough. :-s |

That's a good point. I have bought two houses since 2002. Both of the houses were owned by widowed, octagenarian but sadly, expired gentlemen.
What an incredible legacy of plastic knobs, brass, japanned and rust-coloured screws, inner-tubes, bits of varnished wood, old tins, twisted nails, rusted tacks, string, netting, old postcards and cast-iron bits I have inherited.
Out of a sense of duty and conscious of possible future usefulness I have to hold onto this legacy as well as my own collection.
The netting even has holes in it! |
