Anyone here watch American Pickers.?
Yo..get down with Mike,Frank and Danielle and see those American Mid West barns full of cars, motorbikes, petrol pumps, enamel signs, bonnet mascots etc..the list goes on.
It is amazing the people they meet and the stuff these folks hoard away.
The buildings they put up,the living museums and the vast amounts of stuff they have found.
There was a guy called Dollar Dick the other evening, his house was overflowing with stuff...some do not have wives...that is why they can live in all this crap in and around the bed.!!!
That is what the wife has noticed anyway.
I would love to take a few months, hire a large van and go ...Picking.!!
This is better than the antiques roadshow....more fun and laughs.
Not quite the same doing it over hear in Blighty.
Can you imagine turning up to a farm nr leicestershire in a white van and asking if you could poke around looking at everything the chap owned and then asking if he would like to sell some of it... he would think you were checking out his joint
for a midnight visit.

Its a great show Rick. You should watch it. Most wives however have a load of crap lying around anyway. The nearest I ever got to a load of junk was when I went to Aberfoyle for some marina bits. His sheds were bulging but he had my bits looked out for me and I couldnt get a good rake about the place. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

They say there are even cars buried on site.
All from the track to the hedgrow and field, a lot hidden int the woods as well.

Where is that. That looks like a Google Earth shot. Would Google Earth let you look in scrapyards to see what was there. We could Google Earth each others gardens for a nosy. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

I've just seen the trailer for it on Youtube:
American - check
Two buddies - check
Both have a speech impediment, every couple of minutes they have to stop to draw breath - check
One normal looking - check
One short, fat and with a strange-looking beard - check
White van - check
Road trip across America - check
Stop at unlikely places - check
Find/buy apparent load of rubbish - check
Sort through rubbish -check
At last moment find valuable antique - check
Sell valuable antique for vast amount - check
Go home happy - check
Yes, once again they've turned the handle and churned out a series identical to a dozen others Let's hope they make another series of Salavage Hunters soon; that sort of thing can be done well. They go to interesting places, the sidekick varies from week to week and the banter livens up the otherwise dull spots.

Not too far from here.
I presume Richard H and Smiffy220 now it as it's closer to them.
As you say both google earth images.
My abode is still without my garage extention as it is 2006.
And in the street mode you can see mother closing the curtains.
And also see her at my cousins in the garden at Southend.
Those images I believe are 2006 as well. |

The Pickers Iowa store is a couple hours from here. I know a couple guys who were picked. The show isn't quite what it seems to be on tv. The Pickers show up with a caravan of trucks, crew, etc. Part of the show is rehearsed and deals are made beforehand. They also buy more than is shown. They usually have a big crowd waiting for them and the guys sign autographs and chat with everyone.
It can disappoint went you see a car or something in the background and they ignore it.
Still a fun show to watch as we get to see a lot of unusual treasures! |

Apparently some councils have done this to check if people have built extensions, garages etc. without planning permission. Thing is it's so rarely if ever updated I think it's less use for that sort of purpose than it might be - when I checked my street once their pictures were several years out of date |

I was pointing out that the programme existed and was interesting to the point that they find items from the past that at least I like to see..
I think Mike,Danielle and Frank are good at presenting the show.
Would we be any better on the big screen.?
I have known a lot of Americans like this pair for more than 40/50 years.
I just love some of the characters they meet on their travels who live on these farmsteads.
We had some big airbases near us and I would hang out with loads of Americans with our custom vans, trucks or American cars.
They were really fun guys to hang around with, the words they used, the theatrical melodrama`s they would play out,and the way we would set up camp and party at events all over the UK.
Of course they have a film crew with them..every programme on the TV has one or it just would not get recorded.
Michael Palin did not go Round the world in Eighty day`s on his Jack Todd.
Ray Mears is not alone on that deserted island..or is he.?
I just love some of these characters on these USA programmes.
Fast and Loud..the guy with the huge beard..great when you are welding.
You just would not get the things to work on over here that they seem to carry out over in the states, the suppliers are there to get special parts you need.
If you needed some alloy wheels for a car project filmed over here double quick you would be told by Barry in Birmingham the spares guy.."That the van is stuck in traffic on the M6 and will be with you tomorrow",the day after the filming has finished..
I have tapped American Pickers and Overhaul tonight so when I finish in my workshop I will sit down with a beer or two and watch them.

It seems it is a state secret what channel it is on.
Or is it for a select few to watch by appointment only. |

Roger, et al
In the US "American Pickers" is on the Discovery or History channels.
It took Mike two years to put an agreement together with the producers before filming started. It's no more fake than Top Gear or Wheeler Dealers.
In my opinion it's a great show. If you focus on the content, rather than the presentation, I'm certain you'll find it of interest.

Not one for sitting in front of the TV usually |

Channel 523 Sky 5.00pm-6.00pm Chasing Classic Cars.
Looks to be some fantastic motors on there.
Repeated at 9.00pm later tonight.
I watched American pickers last night when I came in from the worshop 10.00pm.
I tape the programme to aviod all the adverts.
Some great stuff on there last night.
AMI Jukebox,Amoco petroleum banners, enamel signs, the chaps father ran a garage in the 1930`s onwards so he even had the Amoco uniform they would wear on the petrol forecourt from the 1930`s.
