As many of us are as old (or older) than the classic cars and bikes that feature in these forums we probably drove, owned or at least saw these when they were new,and watched their values and numbers drop and then the value climb again.
Hindsight is a wonderfull thing,I thought that if I could back to when I was a younger man with the knowledge I have now I'd have done things (car wise) differently.I sold classic english bikes (including a vincent) for next to nothing and hoards of cars for what was then the going rate (like Mk1 cortinas for £60) If I had to pick one thing... I'd not have sold a running.Mot'd M7 Jag with a number plate ending 123 for about £50.
How about anyone else,if you could go back what would you have done different? _________________ Thirty years selling imperial hand tools for old machinery(Now happily retired). |

I would have bought all the Aston Martin DB5s I could find and stored them. They used to sell for around £250 for tidy usable cars _________________ ROVER

| Fiat 500's; had loads of them at about £50 a time from the auctions, although they were very rusty when only 10 years old. What a state they are in by now! |

I wish that I could have bought an original Ford Cortina 1600E when they were still in abundant supply in the 1970s or taken the advantage of buying the white one, a 50k genuine mileage car which I was offered in November 1982 for £750.
There was also a 1972 Mark 1 Ford Escort RS1600 which I was offered in March 1980 - but that's a story for another time

1964 Jaguar mk10 bought for £60 in 1976.
Ginormous straight 8 French thing -( Delage perhaps?) convertible, bought for £15 on a Friday in 1960, sold for £17.50 on the Sunday, cos I had no more money for petrol!
The last time I saw the mk10 was about a year later; it had a breakdown crane mounted in the boot and was being used as recovery on a banger racing circuit!
Happy days, but just think, if we'd kept them all: a) where would we keep them and b) they'd be worth nothing now, cos they'd be too common. |

MG J2 offered for £14 in 1961. Wolsely Hornet sports £50, around the same time. E type Jag £100, 1970. the list goes on.
Worst of all, the KTT Velo I sold for £12 in 1957. _________________ Due to the onset of my mid eighties I'm no longer sprightly and rarely seen in my Austin special. I have written a book though. https://amzn.eu/d/7rwRRqL |
