Is there a difference between the three. The only difference I can see is that the estate tailgate is more or less vertical or is it just a manufacturers name becase they all perform the same function.

I think a lot of it depends on who is putting the label on it.
I have seen the hatch or estate difference put down to whether the seats fold flat or have a stepped floor when folded; and a lot of h/backs do have seat backs which just fold down on to the top of the squab rather than the squab folding up forward to let the seat back drop down flat.
personally I have always felt that estates should have split rears al-la the A40 countryman giving you a convenient picnic table.
Of course there are other cars called estates by their makers which have side hung doors either single or double.

I mentioned earlier in the "first hatchback" thread the AM DB2/4 and the Aceca did they actually have folding rear seats?
Were they perhaps Liftbacks just having a larger access to the boot area?

I would agree with you on the liftback giving more access to the boot. I had a Toyots Corolla liftback a couple of years ago and it gave great boot access.
