Point taken, gresham, but if I bought one like that, I'd still use it as intended.

Iceman, where are you staying in Penrith?
We've wintered up there a few times, at North Dyke farm.

Just to add my 2p worth to the thread, I was at a steam rally back in the summer when the lady I bought my Eccles from brought me some paperwork and other bits she had promised when I bought the 'van. Turns out this van was bought new from Harringtons of Middlewich in 1957 by a caravan club member, he used it regularly until 2004 when it came into the previous owners possesion, she used it with a young family to go around the rally circuit when she was crewing with her father on his traction engines, I bought it and kept it undercover for 12 months until I had somewhere nearer to home to store it, and myself and my wife have used it regularly for the last couple of years... The only time it has ever had a problem with water leaking was whilst it was sheeted up outside, the sheet trapped the water on the roof and allowed it to wick under the roof joints. Now it is kept outside and used regularly, it has no problems with damp of any sort, much to the chagrin of a friend whose modern 'van has been in and out of various workshops all the time he has had it. I have no qualms about little mods to make the 'van more user friendly, as the first owner has done some during it's "working" life, and all i shall do is bits and pieces to keep using it as Eccles intended 55 years ago!
