I'm guessing something like a late 30's/40's Packard perhaps?

BTW, the people all over it were a folk group called the Trees who released just 2 LPs back in 1970 - now very expensive and hard to aquire. Another passion of mine is obscure music of that period, but I digress!

The Trees was also a song in the album Hemispheres by The Rush

The sidelights look like a 36 Buick Century, or Mclaughlin Buick.
The bonnet badge looks like a Kew built Chrysler, but then the bonnet line and sidelights are wrong.

Chrysler Royal seems the most likely, you guys are good! Any other suggestions welcome of course.

One of my record collector friends has said he'll ask one of the surviving band members, but no joy so far!

I have no further shots - even this one was obtained from a period music magazine clipping.

As to the Trees, well I'm aware this is a car forum, but their music is very highly regarded by collectors such as myself and for good reason.
Almost any obscure album can be had as reissues these days if you want to hear it, but for me that's not a satisfactory option!
The first album has reached £575 and the rarer second, £689!

The Royal doesn't have side lights or a strip at door handle level.

Unfortunately American cars of that era are all similar to each other.

Here's a Pontiac but it doesn't have the handle strip or side lights either.

I'm positive that it's a 1936 Buick. It doesn't have the usual optional sidemount spares and appears to have the headlamps chromed. Lendrum & Hartman were big on adding chrome to various bits.

I think it's a 1936 or 1937 Studebaker President.

Wow, all great suggestions and yes, so many US cars of that era were very similar. I find them very stylish I have to say, as I do most cars of the 1930's.
The only other info I can offer is the band were British and its almost certain the picture was taken in London. They would have had very little money, so a beaten up 30+ year old car at the time would have fitted the bill perfectly!
I believe the Chrysler Royal was assembled in Kew which gives it a slightly better chance than the others.

I did think London.
The wall, with broken glass topping, and the gasometer's remind me of three locations I know of.
All three where similar in appearance along perimeter roads.
The Oval, Lisson grove and Kings cross in the 60's and 70's

The gasometer's at Kings cross have appeared in many films
Ladykillers and Chaplin being two
