I know it's got nothing to do with classic cars, but I thought that Larry might be interested to see this. I came across it sitting at a very awkward angle today. I guess it's been abandoned until after the Festive Break.

I wonder how it got in there like that. There are some heavy ruts on the grass verge. I dont even recognise the make. I think they are using Kangoos and Peugeots at the moment. At least it will be easy to drag out of there.Where is that Peter. Is it near you. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |

Larry, it's about 25 miles from me in one of my old stomping grounds near Kiltarlity. It will be working out of Beauly sorting office near Inverness.

I think it's one of those Vauxhalls they have been running for years. It looks like the driver might have braked when a car was coming out of a house track just ahead. It is on a slight gradient with a slow right-hand bend.
There were tyre marks showing it went down the bank, probably already spinning and ended up facing the opposite direction wedged against a tree and propped on rocks from an old wall. All this about eight feet from the road.
I think Royal Mail must have a hellish bill for repairs like this. I had a bad one in an identical vehicle when I was with them when a tractor drove straight out of a steading into the side of me. Everything behind the cab was like a banana; only about 3 weeks old (the van that is!)
It's about15 years since I had any significant incident in my own cars (last time; hit a deer), but with Royal Mail I seemed to have a slow speed scrape a very 3 months or so and I was not on my own.
One of the issues was the need to go down tracks to remote properties; one guy even managed to take a chunk out of the gearbox; and he was a right softy driver who rarely got out of third gear on a five speed box. But that's another story.

Paint looks a bit faded, uunless it's the photo. Is it an ex Royal Mail van, possibly? They've just had a bunch of new ones round here, the local sorting office has had quite a few more new vans than they had before probably to cope with all the fleabayers out there |

It's a bad photo (mobile), not as good as my usual. It is a current Royal Mail van because they remove the decals when sold on. Many of them are pretty scrappy round here. I guess scrap is what will happen to it now.
The situation just reflects the way many of the drivers round here tear round the lanes. I know from experience, they know the layout better than anyone else except the farmers and push their luck with great skill until occasionally they come a cropper, but not usually as bad as this. |

Here in Mid Wales, red van man seems to have a similiar record.
If a bright flash goes past you exhibiting red shift characteristics it will be a Postman.
They must have a bad time obtaining insurance. I know of several accidents locally.

When I worked for them my manager told me that Royal Mail is self-insuring as they have sufficient funds to cover any eventuality. What I found most annoying was that when I had a "no-fault" accident when a builder decided to reverse into the van, I was told I needed to inform my own car insurer and that that might affect my own premium.
This is one of the "roads" that I frequented near Cawdor Castle.

Peter thats a great road compared to some of the farm roads I used to go up to recover broken down Mail vans. Some of the farm roads had potholes that deep you would be lucky to get a tractor up them. It got to the stage that some farmers were told to collect their mail at the sorting office until the roads were fixed. All the Minor and Marina vans on these roads were fitted with sump guards and boy did they need them.
There are quite a few 05 plate vans still running about which is unusual as they only kept them until the warranty ran out.
I notice there are Mail vans running around with English crowns on them. This was frowned upon years ago and if any new van came with English crowns fitted they were removed and fitted with Scottish ones. The Welsh did the same. Anyway I am deviating from the discussion.......but thats a good road. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |
