Back in the 1950s when very few small vehicles were diesels it became quite common for Perkins P3 engines to be fitted in place of the (often side velve) petrol engines. Pre-War cars with timber frame bodies were often literally shaken to bits by the vibration and the fad soon passed.
Even then people were looking for ways to reduce fuel costs!!
