Hi all. In my S&W Stirling 1965 it still has the original chemical toilet. I am loathe to have a toilet in a small 12 foot space, especially because here in Australia there are plenty of really well serviced toilets even at free-camping grounds. So I am looking at keeping the loo in place, lining it and using it as my rubbish bin, complete with lid!
But while on the subject, I wanted to put in a little about the manufacturer and what instructions are on the underside of the loo lid. I was hoping for some comments on why small English vans had toilets in the first place, assuming that in the 60s in Britain, there may have been limited toilet facilities. My wife did have an issue with keeping the toilet, because it sits in the toilet closet right in the doorway, and is seperated from the stove by 12mm of timber wall! Her comment was something like, "Imagine cooking up a nice steak with a dirty turd in the toilet right next to you? No thanks!"
Anyway, enough speculating. Here is what the toilet instructions say:
In this chemical toilet use only Racasan Self Cleaning Sanitary Fluid for maximum efficiency and absolute cleanliness. Racasan Limited - Ellesmere, Port Cheshire England |

A lot of people had a toilet tent outside, but most didnt like going outside in the British summer. What with all the rain, frost and snow we get here in the UK in summer. So we used the inside loo. _________________ I can resist anything except temptation ! ( Oscar Wilde)

Just seeing the word 'Racasan' has made my eye water from the memory of the appalling sharp smell of the deadly blue fluid. I swear as soon as I grew out of a fear of foxes living under my bed, I acquired a fear of dropping into the chemical toilet in the family caravan. I don't doubt that Racasan was probably perfectly safe, but my childhood memory of it is that it was a toss-up as to whether dropping into (or even being splashed by) this or neat acid would be worse.
There, that's got that off my chest! |
