I must admit, I do quite like old pushbikes .. first up, one for the Ladies, by Raleigh, fitted with mod cons such as the essential tennis racket holder, front lamp, large ding-a-ling bell, saddle designed for those of a wide frame themselves Wink , proper old stand, and a rear rack. Apologies for the modern pump in the photo, it doesn't usually live there!!

Second up, another Raleigh but this time for the gent. Few accessories on this one although it does sport a rather fine Raleigh pump on the downtube. Again a saddle built for comfort, with a 3 speed (inc dynohub) rear setup

Hi

My two old bikes, well old design for one of them! I love when riding it someone comes up to me and says "What year is it?" I reply "it is 2007", They say no the bike, I say yeah 2007! well it is funny when it happens anyway! hehe Laughing

The PF and me:-

The other old Womans bike is 30's, and was rescued from a skip, new tyres, tubes, and a bit of grease/oil, and paint, makes this (excuse the gin bottle, but it doesn't have a stand and I was near the recycling bin!) Note the silver stripes on the mud gaurds, which is what I believe to be original paint used during the blackouts of the second world war!:-

(Photo taken about 30mins after rescuing it, so it looks a bit better now! I did find a disused mouse nest in the sadle bag though!)

I do like old bikes, and enjoy cycling, I struggle to run as I have dodgy knees, therefore I like to cycle to keep fit! Being slightly excentric as some say, or victorian as others point out, I like to ride something a bit period!

Cheers

Dave

Just saved an old Gents Raleigh from the skip and noticed, like Rick's, it had a generator incorporated in the three speed hub. I used to lust after these bikes in the 40s but seem to remember the generator being in the front hub. Anyone know when it changed, or have I got it wrong?

( I need another project like I need a hole-in-the-head but I just can't resist them)

well done pigtin!! I'm not sure whether there was a changeover, or whether some companies put 'em in the front, and others in the back (sometimes combined with the Sturmey Archer hub). Whats the condition like?? isn't it amazing how much stuff still gets chucked, probably during house clearances

You,ve jogged my memory Rick; the bikes I used to lust over were Hercules.
Here's a photo of the old Raleigh, mechanically sound with the tyres holding air, but cosmetically dire.
I think I will only treat it with some chrome cleaner and spray on some 3-in-one, then I wont have to worry about it being pinched when I ride it to the shop.
p.s. please note the "upmarket" use of a brandy bottle, the gin wasn't empty. http://i158.photobucket.com/albums/t103/donthebat/OldPushbike.jpg

well worth saving eh!!! don't forget to wear some cycle clips if the bike is very oily, don't want to muck up the strides Smile

perhaps I don't drink enough, I don't have any photos of old bikes being propped up with liquor bottles Question Wink

As I approach my geriactric stage I am not sure if this is a serious machine.. Or if it should be in the humour section?

cyclemasters are perhaps the most common, somewhere there is a thread about the various motor-assisted bikes!

Anyone know if spares are available for old Raleighs? The "Banjo" type devices that screw into the handlebars for the brake levers to rotate in have stripped the threads.
It would be nice not to have to spend hours poncing about on the lathe trying to make new ones.
