WHISTLING BILLY MAKES RACE RETRO DEBUT

You don’t get much more historic in motorsport than ‘Whistling Billy’, the 1905 steam powered racing car that has undergone a full restoration and rebuild, and will make its Race Retro debut at Stoneleigh Park from 22-24 February.

Originally built by the White company, this steam works sprint car was made for the popular new motor racing on the dirt trotting horse tracks throughout North America. It was called Billy but was soon renamed Whistling Billy because of the howl that it made from its burners going down the straights.

Its engine was a 1905 compound 20hp White steam car engine with Stephenson’s link motion that was soon modified to have a piston valve instead of a slide vale on the high pressure side, something all Whites had after 1907. The steam generator was a 30hp mono-tube as used then in the 30 and 40hp cars from 1907 onwards. Most of the other parts were stock parts from production cars. The car was fuelled by gasoline or kerosene and the burner jets were enormous.

Whistling Billy started winning races; on July 4th 1905 it took nearly four seconds off the World track record for the mile with a time of 48.35 seconds (about 74 mph). Driven by Webb Jay, who believed he was driving the fastest car in the World. Its fastest recorded speed was 120 mph and Race Retro is hoping to make it whistle once again if it can bring Whistling Billy back to life in the Fire Up Paddock.

Visitors can also enjoy high octane rally action on the Live Rally Stage on Saturday and Sunday, appearances by motorsport legends Sir Stirling Moss and Murray Walker throughout the weekend* on the interview stage, the Silverstone Auctions Retro and Classic Sale and the Fire Up Paddock as well as hundreds of traders.

Adult tickets for Race Retro, sponsored by Peter James Insurance and HERO, start at £20 in advance with children’s tickets at £5 for Friday and Saturday and free on Sunday. Car parking is free and has been moved to a hard surface area nearer to the halls. The show is open from 9.30am each day and closes at 5.30pm on Friday and Saturday and 4.30pm on Sunday. We went yesterday (photos to follow), stand-out car for me was the Alfa on the VSCC stand.

We were there too, good show but pricey at £25 a head on the door. The Alfa 1962 Giulietta SZ Coda Tronca (great name!) on the Alfaholics stand was our 'car of the show'.

What did you think to the "barn find" condition Lotus Mk6 trials car?

Missed that one! I was fascinated by the Lotus 19 chassis on the Crossthwaite & Gardiner stand. I was on a bit of a mission yesterday but only accomplished about half as legs were giving problems - arthritis is a real b*gg*r sometimes.

The little red Abarth was a cracker and I'm looking forward to seeing the OUMF Riley 1.5 on the track later in the year. There was a good lineup of Alpines too. We spent some time looking at the paintings and prints before buying none of them, all I handed over money for was £3 for a Rivers Fletcher book

Was that the bare-metal 1.5?

The Zagato Abarth with the bubble roof was great yes.

I didn't spend much either (although I could easily have done Wink), two photos of the Alfa once carried by the truck, and an old wooden jigsaw featuring a racing scene on it.

We only had a quick scoot around the autojumble, and missed the rally demonstrations altogether.

Moss and Walker were spotted around and about, as were Tiff Needell and Jimmy McRae. The tall fella off Wheeler Dealers was doing some promo or other.

Yes, that's the 1.5. They reckon it'll be racing at Silverstone on April 6th!

The autojumble halls were freezing (I don't do 'cold') and we missed the rally stage and car auction too. Spotted various celebrities - Edd China is the 'tall fella'. The Evans Waterless Coolant he was promoting is interesting stuff, I'll be getting some for my own 1.5 before the summer as it has a tendency to overheat in traffic on hot days.

I went on Sunday, it was a good show but I think attendance was down - we sailed straight into the car park with no queue, and were finished just after 3pm and ready to come away.

It was quite pricy on the door, but save a fiver next time by booking in advance. It's like anywhere really - £3.20 for a sandwich is taking the mickey a bit, but I had the choice to bring some or whatever, places like this are always expensive.

There was a booking fee on tickets bought in advance so the saving was less than a fiver. I think for the ticket price a show guide should have been thrown in, I didn't buy one and only saw one person reading one. We took our own sarnies and discovered the best (and cheapest) coffee was from the caterers in the frozen wastes right at the far end of the autojumble hall. There were also tables and benches to sit at.

People were leaving in droves by 2pm on Saturday though we stayed till after 4. Those last two hours were the best, no crowding! I enjoyed the show as much as ever but the high ticket price means it's not value for money.
