Thanks for that Larry. I wonder if they will be going over the recent list of organisational c*ck*ps that have stretched the cost and time taken to give it its most recent overhaul.
The locomotive has covered a vast distance, even going across Australia if I remember correctly.
These old loco enthusiasts amaze me with their energy and committment. |

The Flying Scotsman was in Oz in 1989. Ian Willis (a WA enthusiast) arranged to bring it from the East Coast to Perth in Western Australia. (about 2500 miles) It was pushed in front of the diesel powered "Indian Pacific" transcontinental train and if I remember correctly, sustained some damage due to it's not being properly lubricated on the journey.
While in WA it not only met up with it's old rival, the ex GWR "Pendennis Castle", (owned at that time by Hammersley Iron in Dampier) but it was coupled with her to pull some excursion trains. Absolutely fabulous!

IIRC, not only has the 'Scotsman' travelled in recent times, it was also in America, for an exhibition, not long after it was commissioned, so 1923 or 1924. It is certainly a well travelled loco, even if some of the excursions have been on board a ship. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

I watched the programme and thought it was great.
It was really nice to see the amount of people turning out to see her everywhere she went .....some of the crowds were enormous!
Nobody seems to get that interested in anything these days unless it's a Bl@##y celebrity !
.....and with those maintenance costs......I think I'll stick with my little Ford Pop!!! |

I thought 'taps' at the mention of his name. Didn't realise he died in March of last year, great chap. |

Very good programme overall I thought.
There was no mention of Peter Waterman among the previous owners however.
I suppose that archive film of the locomotive must be limited because I noted that many of the early shots were black and white versions of colour film.
Many views showed the locomotive with the second tender which was built while Alan Pegler owned the locomotive in the 1960s. The footplate cab scenes, some of them, were from a A4 pacific in particular the driver change over.
Small points, yes, but in an documentary programme the inaccuracies were noticeable.
The first A1 pacific built by Nigel Gresley was the "Great Northern" and I noted that no mention was made of the earlier pacifics built by Sir Vincent Raver for the North Eastern Railway or indeed G.J Churchward's "Great Bear" No 111.
Churchward's comment on hearing of Gresley's new pacific was - "Why did that young man want to build his own engine. He could have bought ours!"
I also thought it significant that no mention of the 1925 locomotive trials between the LNER and the GWR when Collet's Castle "Pendennis Castle" outperformed Gresley's pacifics.
Not that I'm a GWR enthusiast, of course, but it took an ex GWR man, K J Cook, to finally solve the problem of the middle big ends on Gresley's pacifics to run hot.
Where do I duck?

Whilst I do like Gresley's Pacifics I also love Churchward's designs and I'm an east coast man.

I enjoyed the programme very much. Half an hour would have been long enough and I also was surprised Pete Waterman didnt get a mention. _________________ The Clan Chieftain |
