not necessarily your first car, but the first you drove! first one I piloted was dads Volvo 121, sat on his lap, steering while he did the rest. First proper drive was in mum's '67 Mini estate, swiftly followed by the Mk1 A40 that I took my test in 2 months after my 17th b'day.

my mother's Ford Pinto, 1973, i first drove it in 1979. it doesn't deserve the awful press it got back then; it was a dependable and robust little car. i'd love to have one like it today... especially the mileage it got. all the rest fall into " the first whatever"; first BMW, first MG, etc. the Pinto was the FIRST.

First was my Dad's 1960 105E Anglia, round and round his Uncle's Farm in Kent, when I was 11 years old.

First on the road was on my 17th birthday - my Mum's 1965 Fiat 500, passed my test in it six weeks later with a 6ft 6in examiner. It was said that he only passed me so he didn't have to get in the car again!

You never forget your first!

My brothers Mk 1 Consul Cortina (as opposed to a Ford Cortina) in 1970.

Not that we knew it at the time but from what I've picked up over the years Consul Cortinas were the original production models and then the badge was changed to "Ford Cortina" - but if anybody knows different I'd love to know.

Hi Scotty, yup the early Mk1 Cortinas were called Consul Cortinas - the horizontal bonnet badge said Consul instead of Cortina, not sure when the Consul name bit was dropped though!

Not quite sure if it was an Austin 10/4 or the current standard 8, I tried to drive them both around 1955. Being under age it was done out of sight and for a very short distance.
Nostalgia is a powerful emotion as I bought and restored a 10/4 in 85/86 and a Standard 8 about 4 years ago. I was very glad to get rid of the Standard as is typified one of the lowest points of design and quality before the subsequent decline of the British motor industry.
The 1932 Austin 10/4 I still use and 'love-it-to-bits'. It's going to outlast me by a very long time.

This is the car I learnt to drive on, some years later. It was a 1937 Austin 12 and it had already been in the family for a while when the photo was taken; I was the little lad on the right. Funny how in the 50s you used to wear your school uniform when you went out for the day, I suppose your family couldn't afford any other respectable clothes:
