I can't believe qualified mechanics earn less than £30 k per year? (£15 ph)
Our engineering "on" costs with margin is around 2.5 * base salary, so if a mechanic earns £45k per year, that would equate to about £23 per hour, making £60 the sort of rate that a garage should be charging, with the dreaded vat that would be over £70 per hour.

In my humble but accurate opinion the answer to the original question is scrappage!!
Get a grand for trading in your 10 year old 40K miles metro for a nice new Kia (manufacturing jobs exported to Korea) 7 year warranty (maintained by main dealer only) and what do you expect??
