|
|
I am gearing up to replace the engine in my Morris 8 E with a recently purchased reconditioned engine (Oh its a thing to behold). Whilst the engine is out I intend to cure the gearbox oil leak which is worsening by the day (drips.....(more than drips actually) from the gearbox bell housing drain)
I understand from ukdave2002 via a previous topic, that the problem should be cured by replacing the main bearing at the front of the main gearbox shaft. In the absence of a seal, wear on this bearing allows oil to escape.
Question. How much of a job is this to replace? Do I need a puller? etc etc. Also looking at drawings of the gearbox internals there is a 'cross member shaft' (don't know what else to call it) which might be in the way of extracting the main shaft and or bearing....does this need to be removed also.
ukdave can you help on this please...... or anybody else who has cured the same problem.
Kind regards

Hi Stuart
are you sure its the gearbox that leaking, rather than engine oil via the end main bearing cap?
Cheers

Hi. I cured the engine oil leak via the sump jiggle pin some months ago more or less successfully, just an occasional drip. I replaced the front and rear oil seals.
At that time as now the drain hole at the front of the gearbox housing was leaking.....now worse. Its clearly heavy oil thats leaking, so I am sure that the problem is with the front gearbox bearing. I initially assumed that a seal had gone, but now understand that there isn't a seal, but the problems rest with a worn bearing!!!!!
