Interesting item in today's Telegraph:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/motoring/classiccars/11173706/Is-the-classic-car-auction-bubble-about-to-burst.html

OK, now I know some of the following prices are stale, however there is a growing disparity between true "Classics" and the usual suspects for overpaid media "Megastars" to thirst after.

Then the other nasty group are the cash-rich investors........

None, really seem to have true Sympatico with the ethos of poetry of "Poetry in metal": which, to myself, is really rather what it ought to be all about.

Consider the following in relative terms of motoring history; and prices.

I guess a lot a old car fans are just not in the fractional million pound league and if they are they still need to consider how much they will use their toys relative to other forms of toy requiring that expenditure. Houses, boats, aircraft, art, what have you?

Just limiting our attentions to cars there are clearly some very different perceptions as to what makes it worth paying out loads-a-money.

Some are excited by:

Beautiful hand crafted engineering.
Beautiful sexy lines.
Avant garde design.
Rarity value.
Actual racing/rallying success.
Association with the rich and famous.
Important history.

I'm not so sure about the value of rarity except that there may be more buyers competing but I guess the others are understandable.

What is less understandable is certain versions of mass production cars that can command prices 10 or 20 times those using the same mechanicals but with different bodywork. Is there really 10 or 20 times greater enjoyment to be had with these versions?

Much agree, Peter.

One I thirst for has always been a Maserati 250F: those gorgeous rivets in lines and the wondrous "Layer of Sixpences" of the gas welding on the original exhaust.

Etc.

It's just an advanced form of snobbery. I'll take the underdog every time. Their time will come.

As one of the comparatively new rich (or so it seems), my car is on the market. Have a look here to see why:-

And it is only a replica!
