Morning all,

As the title says, have you ever built a car from scratch, either to your own design or from plans? Maybe a kit car, or a special?

Not myself but I know somebody who "built" a new MGB V8 roadster with a Heritage bodyshell using a genuine but terminally rusted MGBGTV8 as a donor.

It was an awful lot of work but the owner and an able assistant managed it in less than ten months.

I also re-shelled my Mk11 Escort, lots of spanner work, the wiring loom was fun, but not as much fun as the Vinyl roof, and the headlining.

Changed the chassis on one:

It still isn't fully built up having been set aside to work on other car projects.

Certainly not me, but Tim Barnes built six cars from kits and was finishing the seventh when he died. A great loss to the world, and his funeral showed just how much he was loved:-

I have never cut up steel and welded up a chassis, no. I have scratch built a few trailers though. Not legal now though I understand...

But, way back in my youth, I assembled a few clubmans and kit cars for those who felt that they either did not have the facilities or knowledge. it was great fun as I always insisted on setting them up before handing them over so got to drive a few interesting cars. One I liked very much was a 3 litre Ford engined Marcos. Very nice motor bought by a bloke who I would have thought could have paid the tax and got it assembled at the factory.

But the more money they have the tighter they are, eh?
