My wife knows that I enjoy books by Robert Harris and gave me his recent publication "V2" for Christmas. It was a fairly typical Harris book wrapping historical events in fiction but well researched and spurred me to find more detailed information about the V2.
This website http://www.v2rocket.com/start/chapters/backfire.html
gives an account of the allies acquisition of the science and technology immediately post war.
Quoted in the above is the location of the very interesting British report. (What you might think of as the V2 Workshop Manual )

p.s. The designer of the igniter was clearly good Nazi!

A good read. Would you guide us to the igniter page please. |

Hi Peter,
I can't now find that drawing but I think it was somewhere in Volume 2. I did find a photo of a gentleman holding the igniter on page 71 of Volume 3.
The drawing is on page 179 of Volume 2.
You'll see that almost all the crew in the photos are wearing German uniforms. This is not because this "Workshop Manual" was a German publication. It was totally British but compiled from information gleaned from the technicians and scientists who created and operated the weapon. Those in the photos still retained their German uniforms. There was no such "Workshop Manual" previously created because no one was to be permitted to know any more information than was strictly needed for their part in the proceedings.
Before I read this recent stuff I had just assumed that the gyro guidance system in the V2 would be a fairly simple mechanical system as in the V1, but no, the V2 was truely "rocket science"!
The fuel was ethyl alcohol and if produced from vegetables would have required 44 tons of potatoes to fill the tank. Although a denaturant was added to deter human consumption it didn't prevent crew working at the combustion venturi from getting drunk from the fumes.

Well that looks fairly complete. Am I right in thinking that the forum software refuses to display any images that are http as opposed to https? Or is it my browser?? It's my stupid browser.

Peter it doesn't show for me in the thread, but it opens alright if I:
Right Click "Open in new window"
Referring to the igniter picture, it looks as if when triogered it spins round what looks like a central spindle.
The ancient Greeks invented that principle of a jet action causing a rotational reaction.

I'm using Chrome but if I use and old version of IE there's no problem.

If anyone else is blighted by the lack photos when using Chrome then change to MS Edge (Chromium). The change is fairly painless as all your bookmarks, settings and browsing history is copied over from Chrome.

This YouTube video created by the British Backfire Operation is well worth viewing in its entirety just to understand the complexity of firing a V2.

If we revert to V1 technology this guy is quite impressive both in terms of his fabrication skills and his film making. It's made to look very amateurish but is actually far from it. Tongue in cheek engineering.

I think the youth of today will not disappoint.
