Hi

I have just got the Ford running, first time I have heard it run and as far as I know it has been a long time since it actually ran.

Sounds fairly sweet, need a little fiddling, but it is getting very hot, after a few minutes it is boiling up, and that is on idle.

Rustyreks has mentioned about me having a water gallery blocked, but I am not sure as the water runs through ok?

Any ideas anyone?

Cheers

did the rad feel warm over its entire surface?? after last nights brief run it seemed quite cool down the right hand side. A partly blocked rad could cause big problems with cooling. Theres no water pump to worry about, so that only leaves a blockage in the rad or possibly in the block. I assume the hoses are ok and not collapsed internally, or kinked anywhere??

Hi

The top hose looks fine and the bottom hose is fine as far as I know, it is a new hose aswell.

The rad feels fairly warm over the whole surface, but is hotter at the top than the bottom, but is this just the thermo syphon, How do you solve a blocked water gallery or rad, or how do you tell for sure?

May have another look tomorow pm, so will try anything you can come up with?

Cheers

Hi

I know I put a new head gasket on, but do you think it could be a problem with this? Be worth retightening the head down, could this cause the running hot?

I doubt the head torque would make it run warm, although it won't harm to carefully re-torque the head after a few decent runnings (when cooled down). Just make sure your torque wrench is properly accurate (remember the aggro I had caused by a duff wrench!!)

Only other thing is timing, but if it was far out it wouldn't have started or run as well as it did last night. Did you run it again today ok?

Not sure how you'd check for a blocked water jacket, probably a long shot that one I think. I think I'd be taking a long look at the rad again if its still running super-hot. Is it worth trying that other rad that you had??

Hi

Yeah I am allways hesatant with the torque wrench, maybe that is the problem!

The timing must have been pretty good as it ran not so bad yesterday, but I thought about that today, so re timed it, and fiddled witht he mixture screws for a couple of hours, advancing and retarding too, and it got no better. This is when I came home to have a think about it!

All I can do is like you say try the other rad!

Cheers

did you put the fan back onto the dynamo? just wonder if it helps to draw air through when the truck isn't moving along

if it doesn't improve with your 2nd rad, you can try my spare one too to see if it makes any difference, I don't think its had much use

running too lean a fuel mixture can make it warm up a bit too - I think..

Hi

Yeah the fan belt and fan are now back on, it does create alot of draft, but it didn't seem to help that much.

I will have a look tomorow, running to lean definateley make it hot but it was set to the book, and if anything it is running rich as it is using a bit of fuel!

I've only just seen this posting, so apologies for not answering earlier.

Buzzy, when engines are standing for a long time, rust deposits tend to settle in the block and radiator. You can try removing these with something like Radflush, but the best alternative is possibly to pop the core plugs, and clean iy that way. Make sure you have new plugs first though.

Otherwise, remove the head and check for flatness. You need a factory manual for the specs. Sidevalve heads are notorious for warping, especially if they are not removed/ replaced correctly. Check at this time that you have not fitted the head gasket wrong, and it is that which blocks a water passage.

Where is the spring posting, by the way?

Pics from the other evening, buzzy at the wheel, blacksmith-Dave stood on top keeping an eye on proceedings:

Photos of the cherry-red exhaust manifold didn't come out alas (it was pitch dark at the time).

Hi

I recon the cherry red exhaust would have been quite dark in the light, it is the same when we forge things, hence smithy's being dark!

Great pics though, thanks for putting them up, can you send me the pics when you get chance too, so I can print them off, for a milestone in the folder, when I get around to doing them?

Cheers
