Hi All,

Having found that there is now a dire shortage of gas mantles for classic vans, I did a few searches on the internet and found a couple of sites which might be of help to those of you who also need them.

One site is selling No1 and No2 mantles at around £9 (Yes! Nine pounds each). They can be found here...
http://www.caravanparts.co.uk/index.php?cPath=67_230

Another site selling No1, No2, & No3 mantles at £3 each is here...
http://www.ebro-fishing.com/Gas_light_mantles.html

For those who want to buy in bulk (no small orders anymore), there is this company who sell a box of 20 for around £100 per box (inc vat)...
http://www.wilmond.co.uk/acatalog/Gas_Mantles.html

Hope you guys find this useful and can once more enjoy the gentle hiss of the gas lamps and the soft warm glow of the light.

Thanks for looking,
John.

If you dont wish to pay what I think is excessive prices for mantles I have used very successfully in our Carlight and other caravans the mantles used on modern gas camping lamps. Just tie the string above the lugs on the gas light and make sure the mantle is central then light it. When it is lit the mantle goes hard and hey presto, you have a useable mantle for just a few pence.
cheers
George

I have a fair few mantles if anyone's struggling. £1 each? Don't fancy posting them though.

This might be DANGEROUS! The hard preformed mantles are designed in such a way that enough air gets INSIDE the mantle - both through the adjustable hole in the bunsen and via the gap between the mantle ring and ceramic burner. This allows the gas to burn properly with minimum carbon monoxide being produced and little or no flame on the outside of the mantle.

These mantles come in various sizes for a very good reason. Each size is designed to be used with a specific size jet (nozzle). Using the wrong size mantle for any particular jet results in inefficient burning of the gas. If enough air isn't mixed with the gas, carbon monoxide results!

Doing it your way may well result in insufficient burning of the gas and may possibly lead to carbon monoxide poisoning. I don't need to spell the consequences out.

If you wish to advocate using gas appliances in a manner which they were not designed to be used, you will have to accept resposibility for incidents and liability which results from people following your advice.

I just hope nobody will follow your advice or ends up in hospital as a consequence of doing so.

Please do NOT advocate using gas appliances in a manner which they were not designed to be used. It is utterly irresponsible.

John.

I'm still not pursuaded by jvh100's telling off and am doing some digging on the net for some more info.

Its been a while but a few other posts about mantles have been on, so have thought about this a bit more and have done a bit of a comparison test. So the way to get the cheap modern mantles to work on a caravan lamp is to use an old ceramic ring from a broken mantle and tie the new mantle to that, it fits the lamp just the same way the original did. When its lit it skrinks back and looks just the same as the original. This then works just like the original mantle and I hope settles jvh100's saftey points. Although i think you'd have to have quite a few lights going and seal the caravan to do yourself any damage .

He forgot to mention that some mantles are made of radio-active material. Jesus, Dalek, you could have killed us all! I'm going back to using my rusty old high-pressure petrol lamp.
