Classic Utes

Brent, who lives in New Zealand, collects a variety of classics, including the Austin A40 & Standard Vanguard utilities shown below. In Australia and New Zealand, these 'utilities' were often referred to as utes for short.

First up is the Austin ute, based on the A40 Devon running gear. Just as with the British-market A40 pickups, this example has the separate cab and rear body, whereas the full-on Australian utility has a mono-body (ie both rear load bay and cab are one piece).

Vanguard

Brent says.... "The Vanguard Ute is a 1959, and quite a rare model. It is the American shaped style - the Aussies didn't like the style so it was dropped from production, I think it was only used for a year before being changed to a Holden look-alike style. Anyway I was wrapped to come across this one, the wellside is in good order. It has some bad rust on the driver's floor and in the fire wall, plus a bit under the sills and wheel arches but definitely worth doing. I will use the other Vanguard I have for parts, it has better running gear and I will end up with a really good ute. The motor in this one goes but not well, just a bit rough for my liking, whereas the other Vanguard has a superb motor and runs like clockwork."
