Now don't get angry you all!
I am all for keeping a registration with a car, especially as it still has its original number.
BUT I live in the Netherlands so an old UK registration is worthless for me as the car will receive a Dutch registration after importing it.

The question I have is what would be involved, what is the procedure to follow.
I plan to buy a 50s car with original UK registration. Because the number is worthless to me I would like to sell the reg. According to the current owner he has had an offer from a registration dealer for 1500 - 2000 UKP. Now that is just too much to ignore.

Is there a procedure to be followed in order to do that?
Does the owner / keeper of the car need to be a UK citizen?
I believe a car would need a current MOT but what about pre 1960 cars which are MOT exempt?

As far as I know, pre-60 cars still need to be MOTd if the number is going to be removed.

Yep, it will need an MOT to transfer the reg, and it has to be done before the car is exported.

If you didn't retain the plate first, and the car came back to the UK it would it most cases get its old reg back, but would then be nontransferable.

I removed the number from a car I was selling to a German gentleman.

You have to fill in a form to retain the number from the car for one year or two, depending on how much you want to pay the DVLA.

I decided one year was long enough to make my mind up what I wanted to do with the number,I think the cost was £120.00.

I had to take my documents to the local DVLA office for inspection.

An appointment was made a few day`s later for them to inspect the car.
I had to take the car to their offices for inspection.

The officer checked the chassis number on the car and some other identity plates to make sure the car was what I informed them it was.

I then received an age related number plate.

I have a document retaining the original number plate.

I can either sell the number or put it on one of my cars,I think I will put the number on one of my cars which has an age related plate after importing it from the USA.

The offer from a registration dealer will just be an offer to sell it on your behalf for that price and take commission, they won't actually give you any money for it.
