Hi
The Dept for Transport is consulting on raising the First Test date to 4yrs instead of 3.
Is this reasonable when nearly 40% of the cars currently attending for MoT tests have failure faults on entry, and even after the minor ones are corrected on site nearly 30% are still unroadworthy
This link gives access to those figures and also what the particular fault %'s are for each class of test, plus other stats re MoT's for the last 3 yrs.

I had a friends wifes' Renault Clio fail at 3 yrs, low miles, gently driven, brakes seized, discs fubarred. Skoda Yetis are failing due to rear disc corrosion. Well maintained high milers might be OK but the low mileage ones only get visual brake servicing. Then there are tyres, I have a relative who smashes his car up kerbs when parking, his tracking is always out and so are his tyres as a result, his son keeps on top of it but how many others do.......
There are too many muppets wandering amongst us to extend the first MOT to 4yrs. |

With most manufacturers offering warranties of more than 3 years and requiring that the vehicle shows its face at least once a year at a dealers to maintain the warranty this ought to be OK. Clearly tyres can fail if curbed or in potholes whether the vehicle is MOT'd or not!
I guess the problem becomes those who would prefer to forget about the warranty, forego the service cost and pay for a MOT - as the cheaper option
I would have thought that 4 years provided there are dealer stamps in the service book would be fair - if the vehicle is involved in an incident with no MOT or dealer stamp then the owner would be liable???? Just thinking out loud! |

Being a pleasant and helpful chap, when I noticed that the car in front at traffic lights had no brake lights (other than the hi-level one) I nipped out and told him.
He replied " Mind your own f***ing business. It's not due for MOT for another four months". It would have been its first MOT.
But I do agree with UKdave, even if just to teach people to check their lights regularly, particularly headlights. |

We have drivers on the road who have taken a test decades ago....and nothing since ... that cant be right ? |

Passed my test over half a century ago - no instruction since. We didn't even have motorways in those days!
On the original topic, son bought his car, Mazda RX, six months old in 2003. First MOT at 3 years it failed and it cost him 3 grand to get it through. he still has it and every third year has to renew all the discs to get a pass |
