Morning all,

A few moments ago, I was having a read of an advert for a shiny Moggy Convertible. It turns out that it is in fact a later conversion, of a two-door saloon. Usually the ad text for such a car might mention words such as "conversion", or "converted saloon".

Lately though, I've noticed these modified Moggys being referred to as "post production convertibles", which tries to lend a little more authenticity to their status I suppose. The word "conversion" may bring up images of angle grinders being wielded upon sad-looking saloons, whereas "post production" sounds more civilised and reputable maybe.

Are there any particular sayings or words used in ads that amuse or wind you up?

RJ

I get amused by cars that have good pants!

Or more correctly using the Scottish term for pants, namely "breaks".

Often used by sellers who think there a word "alot" and they are not referring to something that has been allotted either.

Some phrases do seem to be overused.
I never cease to be amazed at the number of "barn finds" and "nut and bolt, bare metal restorations" that are offered on e-bay.
The word "stunning" is also used far too regularly.

I like the term "very rare" then you see half a dozen or more on the same page.

'Body off restoration ' always amuses me when applied to a car with a unitary body.

I like the word "rare" which seems to have several meanings:
*Made before the year 2000
*Personally I've never seen one before (but until I got this one I had not actually looked)
*utterly knackered and quite useless

I don't think adverts affect most people. I remember a machine in a gents loo in a pub I saw once where someone had scratched a warning on the side that the chewing gum tasted like rubber.

The free ads paper that used to cover the South Wales area used to be good for a laugh at the silly typos and misspellings it contained. Triumph Harolds and Maurice Miners were common fare in the classic cars section along with many other howlers I've since forgotten.

How about "rust free wings" on Morris Minors which are fibreglass replacements?

In the dim and distant days when I worked in Crawley (early 70s) some character headlined a small ad. for his Mustang Mach 1 with the attention-grabbing line, "Wife or car must go!". Having thus raised expectations there followed a detailed description of the Ford, but not a word concerning specification of the wife, which was rather disappointing.
