Ever since I have the 3.0 X-type estate as our "modern" household car (nearly 8 years now), I have been looking at a possible XJ replacement for it.
Because I do not really like the form, body, sculpture of the X-type. Fo me a Jaguar is about being long and sleek. And sleek the X-type is not.
IF I would find a replacement, it would be a XJ40. This has a bit sharper lines than the X300/X308. The X300/308 for most people is more Jaguar as it harks back more to the beautiful XJ series 3. Same kind of front end and triangular rear lamps. But for me, I would like a Daimler XJ40 with the 4.0 liter engine and rectangular headlamps. Jaguar at that time was more into building the best car, retro was not at all on the list. That changed when the ideas for the X300/308 were born.
But the X-type is too good! It is very very useful being an estate and 4WD, and it has all the bells and whistles I would ever want and which are useful (this car is parked on the street). Electric retractable mirrors, heated seats, electric heated windscreens, parking sensors rear AND front. So I decided no - there will not be a XJ replacement for this car.
Still... I much more like the looks of a XJ40 ...

I quite like the XJ40 with the rectangular lamps, but I never much liked the dashboards in them, especially the horizontal switch panel alongside the steering wheel. A minor point I guess.

Each to their own. That does not bother me in the least.
In fact, I do not like the dashboard of the X308 with the overdone dash (deep instruments). The X300 is better, it did take the dash from the XJ40 
What I do not like is the "futuristic" side instruments of the early (pre 1990) XJ40.
