The Anglia auction of last weekend had some great No Reserve bargains I think.

https://angliacarauctions.co.uk/auctions/2728-01-Nov-2025/12499~1-1953-triumph-mayflower
It does look good in the pics with a nice colour scheme. Such a cute car. Hammer at GBP 2,376 inc Premium

https://angliacarauctions.co.uk/auctions/2728-01-Nov-2025/11981~1-1968-rolls-royce-silver-shadow-i
Even cheaper - I do not think I have seen a reasonable presentable RR for this money. Sure it will needs a fair bit of repair but one can have a bit of a gamble with this price GBP 2,268 inc Premium

https://angliacarauctions.co.uk/auctions/2728-01-Nov-2025/12527~3-1963-ford-thunderbird-lhd
And now for something completeley different! A bullet Thunderbird. This is cheap at GBP 4,320 in Premium

https://angliacarauctions.co.uk/auctions/2728-01-Nov-2025/11842~1-1953-riley-rmf-25-saloon
I quite like this shabby Riley too. With the more desiable larger 2.5 engine. Just GBP 960 inc Premium

A beautiful big Hillman! Under 5k at GBP 4,968 to be precise.

For some vague reason I could not insert the link to the big Hillman. This is it:

It may be a forum setting, rather than anything random - on phpBB it's possible to limit the maximum number of links per post. Maybe it's set to four.

It is a nice Hillman, good price for the buyer but tbh the popularity of these models just isn't there.

As we've said on here before the prewar market is on the downward trend.

No, it was having problems with the quotes around the 'big' in the url. You can see that it does not underline the whole of the url.

In many cases yes (there's a tidy looking 30s Hillman on ebay at the moment for not-a-lot). However a decent, but not immaculate, Austin 10/4 saloon hammered for over 10k a few days back at auction, so there are people out there still prepared to pay well for pre-war (not old enough to be vintage) cars. Maybe the Austin had a "desirable" and removable registration number, I haven't checked.

As an owner of many prewar Hillmans over the years we have always found that there just isn't the following as you'd get with Austin / Morris / Ford etc.

So generally you can get quite a lot of car and good build quality too for very reasonable amounts.

Disappointing to see the big Hillman straight up for sale with a dealer.....

So that's a 50% mark up. What have they done to deserve it? Nothing but chance their hand.

Of course most people would not buy a car at auction unless it was simply as an investment but this is not in that market.

Has the dealer pulled it off...only time will tell .

I know people have to make a living but I just don't agree with this. I also note that the dealer after adding their mark up then claims the car is a bargain.

I suppose it is just a case of supply and demand. If whoever buys the car thinks they have been fairly treated by the dealer and are happy with the price they have agreed then it's horses for courses.

Personally I would not buy from a dealer unless there were quite exceptional circumstances. Having said that; I would prefer not to sell at auction although in the past I have done so.

Then again, we all had the opportunity to bid for it at auction.

It's a new game for enthusiasts.....spotting the dealer selling, and finding out what it originally fetched at auction?

Even worse, announcing it to the world via soshul media?

Was the sub-?5000 winning bid the actual, final price, paid by the auction winner?

Does the dealer have to provide some sort of 'guarantee' that was available at the auction?

Lots of ''ifs?''

I have no problem with this. The dealer needs to make a profit.

If you think cars are too expensive at a dealer, keep a watch on the auctions. It just shows there is no need to pay dealer prices.

Like I said, I understand a deal needs to make a profit.

In the last 6 months we have bid on 3 cars in Auctions, I have kept an eye out afterwards to see if they get advertised and none of them have.

With anything like this I set myself a maximum bid (taking into account fees too) as to what I think the vehicle is worth, in my opinion.

If it goes over that then so be it, it wasn't meant to be for me.

Dealers don't always get it right. I found this Mk V1 Bentley advertised by a Dealer for 55K.

I knew the car was pretty fabulous all round and offered to swap my two cars for it.

He was tempted but eventually decided to go to auction where it sold to another dealer for 38K. That dealer sold on the car at another auction a year later for 29,500.

The market for old cars is still falling. Perhaps if it comes back again, I will be able to pick it up for a song? Razz
