| I became so fed up with that kind of sloppy presentation, I stopped taking classic car magazines altogether. I also cancelled The Automobile Magazine when - against all their previously held principles - they started eulogising over hot rods. Not for me, thank you. |

I had a subscription to CCW for a few years. That was enough. I would not regard CCW an authority on anything.
Before the internet I was reading most of the classic car magazines to feed my information hunger. Classic & Sports Car is still one of the best but I cannot stand the increasing emphasis on too modern cars (80s and 90s cars, yes I know these are already 30-40 years old but too new for me).
Only The Automobile for me now, good writing, properly researched articles, good photography. They have a cut-off date for car history around 1960, I would have liked it if that was 1970 but hey you cannot have it all. Some of the articles are not for me. Like Ray I have nothing with hot rods or pages long stories on 30s race cars but overall the mix is pleasing.

Had a few rumbles from underneath, so changed the UJ's on the Volvo today. Fairly minor wear, but cumulative play left in the system, since it is a two piece propshaft. Nightmare getting the centre coupling undone, but helped by having access to a friend's car lift.

Those couplings can be difficult. The worst one I did was on a Vauxhall Carlton and needed a 20 ton press to separate the two halves.  |

Yes it was a bit sticky here and there changing the spiders. Probably the original components. The rear flange had been off a couple of years ago to enable a pinion seal change, but the intermediate one, accessed from a slot in the floor plan (Volvo has an enclosed tunnel) was a pain, due to lack of space for a socket or rachet spanner.
Fortunately my friend, the workshop owner, is an experienced retired mechanic and had a few wrinkles that helped out immensely.

Just done a 50 mile navigational run with the local car club. Volvo starts and runs well, as ever.

Another 24 miles to Heskin Hall Breakfast Meet this am. Very warm but plenty of shade. Quite a few regulars missing, but there are probably other events around, notably Lytham Hall, but at ?20 to show your car, I wonder who is daft enough to go in. Anything above a fiver and most people I know say 'no thanks'. Rip off.

Agree 100% with you.
No way will I pay to show my car, and it dont stop there =
3 of the weekly car meets cancelled their free drivers coffee, so I stopped going there too.
Even on the biggest days, at my events could I use much more than half a bag of coffee, so if a cafe / restaurant wont cough up with that, after all the people we attract, then I am out.

The drivers door window has never worked properly ever since I bought this car, very stiff, with the operating chain always popping off the cogwheel.
New fuzzies when the car was restored didnt help so I have decided to get to the bottom of things and stripped down the door works to see what can be done.
The adustable pulley at the bottom of the door is right at its lowest position, but the cable is still too slack and even though I have doused the runners with silicone spray to make the glass slide more freely, the operating chain still jumps. Someone has tinkered with this before, there appears to be a joint in the cable and the whole lot is simply too long. I am therefore experimenting with a splicing connector to reduce the length of the cable, so that I can back off the adjustable pulley and then use it to fine tune the tension.

Got the winder assembly working with a new cable, the old one appears too long and beyond the scope of the adjustable idler to tension properly. Also, managed to lubricate the runners and have reassembled the door, but need some more of the tapered coil springs to stop the winder and handle rattling. Should be here any day, hopefully.
Also managed to get the driver's door to lock properly.
