I like blue Hylomar. I used to use some very runny brown sealant that set quite hard, does anyone remember what it was/is called? And any stuff for sealing head gaskets? _________________ 1936 Morris 8 Series 1

You should only need a light smear of oil for the head gasket.
Remember it may have to come off in the future _________________ ROVER

The modern equivalent is Red Hermatite but there were loads of similar stuff as used by gas installers most contained red oxide and red lead.
I still have ½ left a pint tin of my Dad's which must be at least 50 years old called Plasticote - this is supposed to be non-setting but it does eventually.
I use grease mainly on both cork, steel and paper. Oli on Corgasyl steel types wich are pre-coated _________________ Rover P2

G,day Nick that brown /red stuff sounds very much like "Stag" to me and when I was a apprentice we always used grease on head gaskets and sliver frost paint on the rest

I was told years ago that Blue Hylomar was the only sealant approved by Rolls Royce. I can't vouch for the truth of that, but it is good and the one I use for preference. _________________ Quote from my late Dad:- You only need a woman and a car and you have all the problems you

I'd go for Blue Hylomar in most cases. |

I think the Blue hylomar is very good. Where there is a machined face to machined face as on my Lotus I have been using what they recomended from 1985. Its called "wellseal" My god its sticky but like the Blue Hylomar its non setting so you can alway disassemble. I think its Rolls Royce approved too. Smells evry disticitve.
