Can we see a wheel hub and the axles please? Looks Austiny to me and fairly typical of some 50's specials.
Of course could be wrong! _________________ Jonathan Butler

Going by the wheels, steering wheel and handbrake, it looks very much like an Austin Seven special to me!
If it is Austin, then the wheels are late twenties (19" with no hubcap) and the steering wheel looks like a Ruby wheel (1935 - 1939)

Only if it's on the DVLA computer, and it looks to have been off the road years so probably isn't. Oh and it's the second and third letters, not the first and second, that give the code. CRA is Derbyshire, but I think it might be CBA (Manchester I believe, I haven't looked it up though). Difficult to read! _________________ Richard Hughes |

You know looking at this again it seems to be just a typical 50's Austin 7 homebuild special. Racing nos are changed for each meeting and the rather permanent 7 painted on is probably just refering to the base chassis.
The steel rear is quite likely reused shaped panels from somewhere else.
CRA was a 1936 on issue and CBA 1946 on. Many specials were re registered when built then anyway.
I don't see this as a serious Shelsley competitor but who knows?
Perhaps the original poster might now like to provide more details. _________________ Jonathan Butler

I lust for more information!
The wing clearance I have assumed is due to the apparent absence of a power unit. Size is difficult to judge it may be a little larger than a 7 but the front panelling is extended forward. There don't seem to be any dumb irons which reminds me of the Ausford a confection of A7 chassis Ford 10 engine plywood sheets and Valspar sported as transport by a friend of my elder brother in the late fifties. It travelled hopefully but did not always arrive! _________________ Jonathan Butler

Indeed it could be a Ford chassis but the wheels look A7 to me. It is rather frustrating when people ask for ideas then don't post again with more information or seem to visit the thread again.
I suppose there was some hope it was a valuable find I suspect its unlikely but who knows?
Time we heard from Cjmower again and yes I am impatient. _________________ Jonathan Butler

Perhaps whatever it is/was, whoever built it, helped to make it street legal by adding what appears to be two ex Austin A30 sidelights on top of the mudguards.
Was the very large #7, just a vanity number ?
It would be great to hear back from CJMower and perhaps even have some more photos.
I think that rear panel had to come off another vehicle and grafted onto this "special". I can't see that anyone capable of producing such a complex shape would have completely lost all their skills when they got around to building the front.
(Photo moved to later post)
I wondered what mysteries lurked in the shadows, maybe we were better not knowing ?
